Most of us encountered Amy Tan’s novel, The Joy Luck Club, in high school English. But Amy Tan’s works are worth exploring beyond a classroom assignment.
Tan’s works are a historical and semi-biographical exploration of Chinese life and culture. This exploration stemmed from real-life discoveries about her family’s past in China before moving to America (where Tan was born in Oakland in 1952).
Tan has written six novels (including The Joy Luck Club and The Bonesetter’s Daughter), two children’s books (her book Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat became a children’s series on PBS), and six non-fiction books (her last being 2017’s Where the Past Begins: A Writer’s Memoir).
